The Importance of Exercise for your Dogs Physical and Mental Health

Updated: Apr 25, 2023

Regardless of a dogs breed, age, size or temperament, every dog needs it’s regular exercise. Not only is it proven to have a variety of benefits for your dogs physical health but also for your dogs mental health.

At Doggy Dorchester Essex, we understand how key this is for keeping your pooches healthy and happy, meaning that we always ensure every dog who comes in gets plenty of playtime in our field.

The first benefit of exercise for your dogs physical health would be that it helps to build up muscles and lower blood pressure. This has further benefits of increasing a dogs life expectancy and reduces the risk of developing various health complications including arthritis and difficulties surrounding their hearts and kidneys. Also it has been shown that another benefit of physical exercise for a dog is that it helps your dogs to have regular bowel movements. This means that they are less likely to be uncomfortable through difficulties such as constipation and urinary tract infections.

When looking at the benefits for a dogs mental health, our beloved animals are known to be effected by depression and anxiety, specifically for some particular breeds where this can be more likely. Just like humans, exercise releases endorphins in our dogs (ie- the brains happy hormone!) This means for our dogs who may miss their owners during the day time or are undergoing some lifestyle changes, getting some exercise will be very beneficial. Also, social connection is just as important for dogs as it is for humans. Often, being around our friends and other like-minded people can make us feel happier. This is the same for dogs and getting some exercise with their doggy friends and neighbours will really make their tail wag.

At Doggy Dorchester, we are dog experts, lovers and owners. We understand how exercise is important for all of the dogs that we welcome here, meaning that when they are with us, they receive the benefits both physically and mentally - leading to a healthy and happy dog.
